Lombok, NTB – Lombok Island is not only known for its beaches and nature. Behind that beauty, there is a superior commodity that is starting to be glimpsed by the world: coffee. With a distinctive aroma and unique taste, Lombok coffee is increasingly recognized, both domestically and abroad.
Coffee plants thrive in the highlands such as Sembalun, Bayan, and the southern part of Central Lombok. These areas are on the slopes of Mount Rinjani. The fertile volcanic soil and cool air make it ideal for coffee cultivation. The altitude ranges from 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level.
The types of coffee cultivated are Arabica and Robusta. Both have different flavor characters, but are still favored by many coffee lovers. One of the best known is Sembalun Coffee. This coffee is light, slightly sour, with floral and fruity aromas.
Lombok’s coffee production continues to increase. This is supported by young farmers, cooperatives, and assistance from the local government. Coffee processing is also still mostly done traditionally. Farmers pick the coffee beans manually. After that, they dry and roast it naturally.
This method is considered to maintain the quality and flavor of the coffee. However, challenges remain. Climate change, price fluctuations, and the lack of modern tools are the main obstacles.
The farmers hope for technological support and training.
